Your Sedentary Life Is Killing You

By Our Blog Guest: Zach Moore, Fitness and Performance Trainer

“No one is coming to save you.”

“Don’t measure in days when you’re measuring in decades.”

These are two quotes that have got me through some of the darkest times …The human brain is the most powerful entity on earth when it should be the human body. The mind can talk the body out of doing the most simple of tasks and even more so it can talk the body into doing the unthinkable.

Everyone has felt the pressures of the world and how crippling they can be on the human mind. Whether it’s from a girlfriend or boyfriend breaking up with you, a death in the family, not getting the job you dreamed of, etc., you have to become comfortable being alone and start making yourself a companion that you’re comfortable being with but … where do I start?

Exercise and mental health, which has gained significant attention in recent years, with physically inactive people being reported to have higher rates of morbidity and mental health issues. The importance of physical activity is at its peak.

Individuals grappling with mental health issues, such as anxiety, depression, or high-stress levels, NEED to engage in regular physical activity as it’s a necessity when dealing with this crippling disease.

The endorphins released during physical activity leads to an immediate improvement in mood and a reduction in perceived stress levels. Exercise functions as a valuable coping mechanism, providing individuals with a productive outlet for managing negative emotions.

I have over 10 years in this field and have seen every walk of life come into my office. All of them completely different with different stories on how they got to this point in their life, but they do share one thing in common … they are unhappy with where they are in their lives today. This is where the quote “Don’t measure in days; but measure in decades” comes into play.

Everyone is looking for the fastest way to something when in reality they are doing more damage than good. The greatest example I have is the increased number of people jumping on Ozempic for weight loss. Ozempic for anyone not aware of this drug is a fast acting weight loss component for people with type 2 diabetes (people who were not born with diabetes) to help them lose weight. Normal everyday people are now taking this drug and are severely destroying their body’s and brain with underlying issues for later in life.

The things we put in our bodies and the sedentary lifestyle we are living are slowly killing us each day … how do we fix this?

It can come in the most basic forms of just moving your body. Going on something as simple as a walk to clear your mind/instill some sort of movement. There is another quote I love to use and that is “motion is lotion”. Its lotion for the brain, body, and spirit; massaging out all the issues we deal with each day.

I’ll leave you with this … taking care of your physical health is the gateway to taking care of your mental health, and by embracing an active lifestyle, you’;re not only investing in your body but also nurturing your mind. Why not take that first step today and discover how movement can transform your mental landscape?
